Starting out in Ultima can be a daunting task for even the best gamer.
This article is designed to be an overview of some of the basics of
entering this amazing world. The article will cover from the creation
of a character to making money in Ultima and then to staying alive.
The overall task is not one for the unmotivated and requires many hours
of gameplay. A character in Ultima can be created in one of two ways. The first is by far the easiest and involves picking from a template of pre-designed characters. Although this is the easiest, it is also one of the worst ways of doing things. It does not allow the player to choose specific skills and this could be the difference between life and death in Ultima. When choosing skills, it is best to pick one skill that is a money maker, like a profession (tailoring, blacksmithing, carpentry, etc.), then for the other two skills fighting skills should be picked. I would suggest tactics and a skill in using a weapon (mace fighting, swordsmanship, fencing). When these skills are picked, the next step is to divide 100 points between them. I believe it is best to allocate the most points to the skills that are nessesary for survival and/or are hardest to raise. Some skills that are notoriously hard to raise are tactics, parrying, and the profession skills(as mentioned above). I should also mention that once in the game there are people who will train you, for a price. Once all of the skills are chosen and 100 skill points divided, it is time to move to another important part of charater creation, dividing attribute points. A players attribute points are an extremely important part of gameplay. They control the success in certain skills, the amount of dammage an attack delivers, the chance of hitting with a weapon, and multiple other in game features. There are three attributes to deal with. The first is strength. |

Strength has many uses in the game, like how much weight a player can carry.
It determines what weapons a player is strong enough to use, as well as a
players hit points. The second attribute is dexterity, it determines how
quickly a player can use a weapon. Also is determines how far a player can run
and how quickly. Third, it can determine how much defense against attack you
have. The final attribute is intelligence. It is, by far, the easiest attribute
to raise. Intelligence is the attribute for mages. It determines magic points
as well as being helpful when it comes to skill success. My recommendation
for attributes is to set strength high enough so that you can use the weapon
you want. Then for intelligence set it to 10 (10 is the minimum for a skill and
30 is the maximum, out of 50 to divide), unless of course one wants to be a mage,
then set it higher. And place the remaining points in dexterity. The next few steps are basically very simple. They are mostly cosmetic. You must choose skill and hair colo. And also choose a gender. The final step is to enter a name for the character and starting location. You then simply follow instructions from the game to get online. You arrive in the world with only 100 gold, whatever you starting skills gave you, and the clothes on your back. The first step is to make some money. Be sure not to leave town or you will no longer be under the guards protection. Before you go off to do stuff it is important to set the macro keys. This will allow you to use one key to do a great many things. Assigning one to yell "Guards!" is never a bad idea. Once you are all set, it is time to make that money I was talking about. the easiest way is to go into town and buy resources with your money (yarn if your a tailor, ingots if your a blacksmith, etc.) then use the tools that are in the inventory on the material. It will either tell you that you are successful or failed |

Once you finally build something sell it to a shopkeeper and use the gold
to buy more resources. Do this until the shopkeeper won't buy the item anymore,
then try another. Once you have a large sum of gold and at leased some studded-leather
armor you can enter the wilderness. Also be sure to buy a weapon that is better
than the practice weapon. Always try to travel with a friend, especially when you are a newbie. If you know some who owns Ultima great, otherwise you have a few options. Brave the wilderness alone, which is very dangerous; find someone in town to travel with, also dangerous because they could kill you right outside of town; third you can join a guild, where there should be many people to travel with (may I suggest the Krosis Imperium). After you have found someone to travel with start to gang up on small animals and your strength increases you can begin to fight stronger creatures. From the animals you can take hides and meat, meat can be cooked and sold or eaten, hides can be sewn into leather armor and studded-leather armor. If you aren't a tailor then you can sell the hides to tailors in town. One piece of adivice is to not attack other players, this will lower you notoriety and cause other people to hunt you down and attack you. This is a quick way to lose a good charcter. Once you have a well established character, Ultima is your playground. You can explore dundeons. You can buy a boat or house. You can wrestle for power in you world. Anything is possible once you have that foothold is Britannia. Hopefully with this tutorial that will be possible. --Krosis |
